Cooperation in Social Dilemmas through Position Uncertainty∗

چکیده
We propose a simple mechanism that sustains full cooperation in one-shot social dilemmas among a finite number of self-interested agents. Players sequentially decide whether to contribute to a public good. They do not know their position in the sequence, but observe the actions of some predecessors. Position uncertainty provides an incentive to contribute in order to induce potential successors to also do so. Full contribution can then emerge in equilibrium. Our mechanism also leads to full cooperation in the prisoners’ dilemma. JEL Classification: C72, D82, H41.

Time, uncertainty, and individual differences in decisions to cooperate in resource dilemmas.
Many environmental problems are resource dilemmas that contain two components-social and temporal-that encourage individuals not to act in the best interest of the group. Most research has focused on the social component. The authors examined the importance of the temporal component in two resource dilemma tasks. Participants (N = 112) reported their willingness to limit resource consumption in...
متن کاملA Construct for Testing Effective Cooperation in Large-Scale Resource Social Dilemmas∗
Social dilemmas are conflicts between individual rationality and general welfare. The literature explains how to evaluate effectiveness of cooperation based on trust mechanism in small-scale social dilemmas, but how to evaluate effectiveness of cooperation mechanisms in large-scale situations remain unknown until this paper. We designed a construct to test cooperation mechanisms used to promote...
متن کاملCooperation dynamics of generalized reciprocity in state-based social dilemmas
We introduce a framework for studying social dilemmas in networked societies where individuals follow a simple state-based behavioral mechanism based on generalized reciprocity, which is rooted in the principle “help anyone if helped by someone”. Within this general framework, which applies to a wide range of social dilemmas including, among others, public goods, donation and snowdrift games, w...
متن کاملCognitive conflict in social dilemmas: An analysis of response dynamics
Recently, it has been suggested that people are spontaneously inclined to cooperate in social dilemmas, whereas defection requires effortful deliberation. From this assumption, we derive that defection should entail more cognitive conflict than cooperation. To test this hypothesis, the current study presents a first application of the response dynamics paradigm (i.e., mouse-tracking) to social ...
متن کاملA Model of Human Cooperation in Social Dilemmas
Social dilemmas are situations in which collective interests are at odds with private interests: pollution, depletion of natural resources, and intergroup conflicts, are at their core social dilemmas. Because of their multidisciplinarity and their importance, social dilemmas have been studied by economists, biologists, psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists. These studies typical...
